Juan Martin Del Potro sets up final with Nikolay Davydenko

After a lack of sleep and the thought of a 13th straight defeat to Roger Federer clearly didn't affect Nikolay Davydenko in the opening semi final today as he raced into an early lead and took a quick opening set 6-2 against the tournament favourite.

Roger Federer wasn't going down without a fight as he improved his service game in the second set and levelled the match, 6-4.

At this point the world number 1 seemed to be on top, hitting winners all over the court. But the surprise semi finalist was chasing shots down and returning them. He then produced a big surprise in game 11 by breaking Federer's serve. Davydenko faced break-back point in the following game, but saved it as he served out the match and a surprise 6-2 4-6 7-5 win to take him into tomorrow's final and end Federer's year with two successive defeats.

In the evening game, Juan Martin Del Potro came from a set down to defeat Robin Soderling. After neither player let go of their serve in the opening set, the Swede ran away 7-1 winner in the tie break. But the Argentina didn't lose his self belief this time and forced the first break of the match, late in the second set followed up by holding serve to force a deciding set.

A tense third set went to a second tie break, and both players continued their powerful groundstrokes as they had been for over 2 hours. This time it was Del Potro who came out on top, finishing the tie break with an ace to win 6-7 6-3 7-6.

Tomorrow's final is streamed free on bet365. If Juan Martin Del Potro finishes the year with the final trophy he will move up to number 4 in the rankings, demoting Andy Murray to 5th; the only player to have beat the Argentine in this tournament.

The single's final begins after the double's final between the Bryan brothers and Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram, no sooner than 2.30pm
