Why Liverpool Won't Win the Premier League This Season

Season after season, Liverpool fans and pundits alike get optimistic about their chances of winning the Premier League, but season after season Liverpool continue to disappoint, as they've still yet to win a single Premier League title.

Last season's campaign saw them finish within 4 points of Manchester United and above Chelsea, an achievement in itself. Losing just 2 games last season was fantastic, but ultimately they drew too many games including home ones against Hull, Stoke and Fulham last season. They kept in touch with the Champions, and above Chelsea after doing the double over both teams. Can they repeat that success this season? They will need to if they want to improve last season's position. Taking 16/18 points from the other big 3 put them in a winning position last season, but they failed to capitalise.

The loss of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid has left a huge gap to fill. His replacement Alberto Aquilani won't even be fit until October, and they looked weak in midfield on Sunday. Lucas doesn't look good enough to improve the team based on his previous performances, but with more game time expected, it's a chance for him to settle in this season. On top of that, the Confederations Cup seems to have taken its toll on Fernando Torres, who looked tired on Sunday. They don't have another established striker in the team worthy of giving Torres a rest. They don't have the strikeforce that both Manchester United and Chelsea have on their books.

Glen Johnson is a great attacking full back, but he won't improve the defence. Their defence performed very well last season and must stay at that standard to compete again. Yossi Benayoun was a goalscoring threat last season and needs to be again this season. To sum up, they need all of their great performances to be repeated from last season, and then some. And on paper, they don't look like being capable of doing so. Their performance at Tottenham on Sunday was an early indicator, but I don't want to judge the on one game.

Chelsea remain favourites to win the title this season, followed by Manchester United.
