Andy Murray wins Montreal Masters

Andy Murray came from a set down to defeat a tired and sore Juan Martin Del Potro in Montreal this evening, 6-7 7-6 6-1

Andy Murray looked the better play in the opening exchanges as both players held onto serve, often with ease in the opening set, with Murray failing to take the only break point. The Brit, who will move up to world number 2 on Monday's updated rankings lost the only service point during the tie break as Juan Martin Del Potro attempted to crash the party.

Last year's semi finalist broke Del Potro in the opening game of the second set as the comeback looked on, only for the Argentine to break back immediately. Del Potro struggled against the Murray serve throughout the match and took few points from it after that. His powerful service game kept him in the set and took it to another tie break, only after receiving an injury time out before Andy Murray's final service game ahead of it. This did not distract his opponents focus, as the Argentine was outclassed, losing the tie break 7.3.

Out of energy after a tough and late semi final finish with Andy Roddick the previous night, a third set was too much for Del Potro who struggled on both his own and his opponent's serve. He showed heart by continuing, but the result was inevitable as the new world number 2 ran out a 6-1 winner.

Andy Murray is currently second favourite for the US Open, but don't expect these odds to stay around for too long with the form he is in, moving onto Cincinnati next week to defend his title. Juan Martin Del Potro needs to take a break and recoup ahead of the US Open. Taking part in the Cincinnati Masters next week would be a bad decision.
